There are certain things one watches on TV that one really watches - full attention on the screen, lights dimmed down low, edge of the seat.
But that is comparatively rare.
Most of the time, "watching TV" involves also knitting, reading the newspaper, having a laptop up and nearby, sending and receiving text messages, wandering in and out whilst cooking and so forth.
I'd say that most programs are "watched" that way.
Now in all my long life I have NEVER experienced anything as UTTERLY ANNOYING as the Go Compare opera ad.
There was a time when I kinda enjoyed watching ads. Sure, there was some terrible stuff that really annoyed me here and there. But it was kinda ok, it's only for a few seconds, you get through that.
Not so with the Go Compare Opera ad.
This has sent me flying across the room since the first time I was unfortunate enough to have that invade my home to get the remote control like nothing else, ever.
I absolutely HATE it.
It destroys the mood, the moment, anything you might want to be doing, and of course, thereby it also destroys any chance any OTHER advertisement has that might be unfortunate enough to be scheduled to run AFTER this appalling disaster that is the Go Compare Opera ad, because I will do anything to escape.
I'll switch channels, fast forward on my Sky box, or even turn the whole show I was watching off, it annoys me so much.
In fact, this one advertisement has led to me now fast forwarding ALL ad breaks, and NEVER watching live ads anymore.
It has also caused me to start looking in preference to a BBC 1 or 2 show which doesn't have any ad breaks, or Sky anytime, which also blessedly doesn't.
So ALL advertisers have now lost their chance to inform me about their products.
Hey guys! I don't know how much you spent, but you should write a letter to the Go Compare people and let them know you're not well pleased that your advertisements no longer reach their audiences because of what they did.
I have been more than annoyed, feeling physically and auditorily insulted and invaded by the Go Compare opera advertisement, for a long time now.
Last night was the last straw, I forgot to forward the ads, and there is was again, and I've had enough. I'm going to start a Twitter campaign now to encourage people to go to Compare The Market, or Confused Com, or in fact, ANYWHERE ELSE other than Go Compare.
They do NOT deserve ANY customers whatsoever in my opinion.
They deserve to be PUNISHED for the pain they have caused me.
So I finally decided to write this article.
Did a web search, and look, turns out I'm not the only one.
Their appalling ad has also been voted the worst ad by the Daily Mirror
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/01/17/oh-no-compare-115875-21973674/
who say, and I quote:
When it comes to adverts that make you want to put your foot through the telly, nothing compares to the Go Compare opera singer.
The commercial for the price comparison website has just been voted the most irritating on TV, as shown by the table on the right.
So there we have it.
Teach Go Compare a lesson and shop for your insurance elsewhere.
It's only a comparison site.
If you ever feel the urge, dive for another comparison site as quickly as you dive for your remote control when this piece of crap invades your sitting room.
And hopefully, other advertisers will start to take the idea of not pissing off people to the point they get so angry, they do stuff like this as well and whilst they're there.
